I Am the Terror that Flaps in the Night
I’ve been a bit late getting on the Assassin’s Creed II bandwagon because of reasons pertaining to my lack of money. However, upon playing on my PC I can say that it’s a vast improvement over the first one; I mean, the elimination of the same repetitive mini-missions and the introduction of well, a truck load of things to do might have contributed to this positive change.
I mean, I can’t stress this enough: besides the main story, I’ve got melee missions, courier missions, assassination missions, collecting missions, infiltration missions, codex deciphering, glyph finding, city-building, weapon collecting… it’s a bit daunting at first. However, the game doesn’t try to shoehorn you into a situation where you might not have access to everything; unless you’re on a story mission, the game’s completely free-roam, which I can appreciate.
The first game’s elegant freerunning system is still there, and it’s still just as easy to get from point A to point B in the most graceful way possible; the only thing I don’t enjoy is the game’s habit of showing you exactly where to run in order to make it to the next objective. It’s almost like they’re giving you a wide open world, saying “you can go anywhere”, then saying “well, go here if you want to have the easiest time.” While I’m not a fan of ball-bustingly hard gameplay, I don’t like my hand held.
I don’t really feel like doing a full review because I haven’t finished the game and my timing is woefully late; however, if you haven’t tried the game and have the opportunity to, do it; this goes double for people whose taste might have been soured from the first game. You won’t regret it.
